How to Install a tankless water heater?

I am sharing two guides on how to install a tankless water heater. First you need to prepare the heater, you don’t want to end up living without hot water for weeks. So, make sure that you can do it yourself.

Tankless Gas Heater

Gas Meter: If you are planning to install a new gas unit, you need to double check if the gas meter is upgraded. Your heating unit will be using a lot of BTUs, your meter should be just ready to provide energy in the required capacity. You also have to assess if the unit can work properly along with other heating appliances that you have in your home.  Call the gas company to see if they can provide the correct amount of pressure to meet the requirements of your unit.

Gas Pipe: You need at least 1-inch long gas pipe to connect the meter with the tankless water heats to make it operational. In case you need a gas line, you need to hire a professional first and get the plumbing work done.  Besides, there must be one gas shut-off valve before you install the tankless gas water heater.

Ventilation system: Unless you intend to install the unit outdoors, you need to have a vent for the indoor heater. It will use the gas to heat up the water, as a result there would be condensation. The fan will push the air out of the unit, you must install a steel pipe secured with silicon joints to vent the air out.  You can use plastic pipe but you would be better to install a steel pipe.

Tankless Electric Heater

You need a minimum of 240-volts of electrical power in your home if you want to install a tankless water heater.  You must not fiddle with the electrical wires or meters without any experience. There must be at least one route for the wiring of the heater.

Most tankless electric water heaters come with a subpanel, it is installed next to the unit. The subpanel usually has an electric circuit break so you can disconnect it. For example, in winter if you don’t get enough electricity voltage you can disconnect the power to the unit to prevent damage.
